Dr. Ray Bowman

Dr. Bowman is currently the SVP for Talent and Team Development at MarineMax, the world’s largest boat and yacht retailer spanning thirty states and three continents. MarineMax is headquartered in Clearwater, Florida. He oversees all Executive Coaching at MarineMax and finds, individualizes, and expands all health plan-related benefits. Dr. Bowman is the President of the MaxHealthPlan Solutions (MHS) initiative based upon his development of the innovative MarineMax health care plan. MHS provides FREE consultation to self-funded companies who want to contain health plan costs while increasing employee benefits. Dr. Bowman attended Florida Presbyterian College (now Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida), Notre Dame, and the University of Georgia. He completed his internship at the Shands Teaching Hospital at the University of Florida. Dr. Bowman holds Diplomates in Clinical Psychology, Neuropsychology, Psychopharmacology, and Forensic Psychology. He maintained four offices in the Tampa Bay area over a four decade practice prior to joining MarineMax in 2011. He is married to his wonderful wife, Debra, for the last 43 years and enjoys spending time with his two beautiful granddaughters, Hannah (11) and Grace (7).

What is the biggest thing you learned in 2020?

How resilient we all are, both as employees and as a company.

What do you feel are the two most important benefits or areas that need to be a top priority in 2021?

Adjusting to the new work location reality. Secondly, attending to the emotional and mental health of employees and their families as we have all experienced some degree of emotional stress during the pandemic.

Can you share a story on an area of your healthcare program or employee benefits where you were able to create significant savings or stop costs from rising?

We are now providing virtual physical therapy at no cost to the individual employee which saves them time and money and also saves the company's health plan a good deal of money.

If you could automatically receive a 10-20% reduction in costs in three areas/programs, what would your dream list be?

Anesthesiologist charges, ER charges, major surgeries.

What is the most innovative program you will focus on in 2021 and/or 2022?

We are in the midst of a plaque reduction study that may help our employees with hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and heart-related illnesses as well as stroke.

How are you re-imagining corporate culture & well-being?

MarineMax is currently in the process of deciding what the new normal will look like, post COVID-19. Our culture is strong but we are moving toward more flexible scheduling for those employees who can, by role, work remotely. This will require, we believe, more communications between our employees as well as creative activities for maintaining camaraderie. We have been and will continue, to address heightened stress and feelings of isolation precipitated by the pandemic. While such issues typically subside naturally over time, we are not content to just let that happen. We are currently providing a number of interventions to alleviate some of these issues such as exercises of all sorts + yoga programs + guided meditation, etc. through a carefully selected provider and this is virtual and at no cost to our employees.

What virtual care solutions did you roll out during the pandemic? How valuable were they and why?

Virtual care rolled out during the pandemic has included Studio Sweat noted immediately above, virtual physical therapy, remote flexible scheduling for those that needed this for one reason or another. Virtual executive coaching for all levels of management providing stress management and emotional support. Frequent in-house communications/postings of CDC Guidelines + additional information regarding positive responses to Covid-related issues.

The COVID-19 pandemic has helped all of us refocus on our priorities in life, helping us realize that family and friends make life richer than any other resource during our existence.
